File Versioning in Foxit DMS (Document Management System)
Explains how file versioning works in Foxit DMS (Document Management System).
Answer
This article explains how File Versioning in Foxit DMS helps you track changes, manage document history, and restore previous versions of a file.
What is File Versioning?
Foxit DMS maintains a version history for each document, allowing you to track changes, restore previous versions, and manage the lifecycle of your files. When a new version of a file is uploaded, the previous version is preserved rather than overwritten.
How Version History Works
- Automatic Tracking: Each time a new version of the same file is uploaded, it is saved as a separate version.
- Labelling: Versions are labelled sequentially (V1, V2, V3, etc.), with the most recent version marked as Current.
- Details Displayed: Each version entry shows:
-
- Version label (e.g., Current, V3)
- Upload date
- File name at the time of upload
- Cross-Format Support:A new version can be uploaded in a different file format (for example, replacing a PDF with a DOCX). Versioning continues seamlessly.
- File Naming Rules: The file keeps its original display name, but the version panel shows the actual name of each upload for reference.
Available Actions on Versions
- Upload New Version: Add a new version of the file from your device. The uploaded file becomes the Current version.
- Restore: Revert to a previous version. The restored version becomes the Current version instantly.
- Download: Download a specific version in its original format.
- Delete: Remove older versions to clean up history. (Note: The Current version cannot be deleted.)
