3 Scenarios of Enterprise User Updates Triggering UAC
The scenarios are as follows:
- Scenario 1: Enterprise users deployed Foxit PDF Editor with MST via Intune; then logged in as a normal user, the upgrade will trigger a UAC pop-up
- Scenario 2: In a Win11 system environment, installed 2023.3.msi release version in default mode using administrator account; then logged in as a normal user, the upgrade will trigger a UAC pop-up
All the above scenarios involve the default installation of the Editor, managed by the “Semi-Auto Upgrade” method.
- Open Foxit PDF Editor using FCW tool, go to Preferences -> Updater.
- Choose "Automatically install updates" or "Do not download or install updates automatically".
- Click save to generate MST file.
First, refer to
- To get Available GPO templates
- Import custom ADMX and ADML administrative templates into Microsoft Intune
Here are the steps to change the setting:
- Open GPO Editor
- Go to Computer Configuration->Policies->Administrative Templates-> Foxit PDF Editor
- Choose Preferences -> Update Settings
- Double-click on Updater in the right panel, click on Enabled in the Updater pop-up, and choose the "Automatically install updates" or "Do not download or install updates automatically" option in Settings.
- Click OK
After completing the GPO import on the server side, perform restart on the client machine.
Inject the following registry information into the client machine if you want to set to "Auto Upgrade"
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Foxit\PDFEditor\Preferences] "DisableUpdate"=dword:00000002 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Policies\Foxit\PDFEditor\Preferences] "DisableUpdate"=dword:00000002
Note that for the value of "DisableUpdate":
- 0: Manual Upgrade;
- 1: Semi-Auto Upgrade;
- 2: Auto Upgrade.
After completing the registry configuration modification, please restart Foxit PDF Editor or reboot the device.
How to use PowerShell to modify the registry info:
4.4 Individual users
In addition, if the customer is unable to modify the configurations on all client machines, individual users can adjust the update mode manually. Here's how to do it:
- Click on "File", Go to "Preferences"
- Click on "Updater", Select "Automatically install updates"
- Click "OK"
- Restart Foxit pdf Editor.
4.5 Applicable Scenarios for the Solutions
- For the scenario of deploying Editor v13 or Editor 2023.x/2024.x via Intune, it is recommended for customers who have completed editor deployment to adopt Solution 2.
- If users have not yet deployed in bulk, it is recommended for customers to use Solution 1.
- If the editor deployment has been completed, but the customer does not want to use the GPO template, it is recommended for customers to use Solution 3.
4.6 Notes:
- The core of the above solutions is to avoid the "semi-auto upgrade" triggering UAC pop-up.
- When the command of msiexec /i "xxx.msi" /qn or msiexec /update "xxx.msp" /qn include "/qn", administrator permissions are required, and then will Pop-up UAC.
